I click the game, the screen loads black like normal at first, then nothing but a white flicker - then crashes to window mode and gives me an error telling me that the game's .exe stopped responding.
Then when I try to open it, it says it stopped working last time it was accessed and gives me the option of starting it in normal or safe mode - neither mode works.
Also tried running it as Admin and in compatibility mode for Windows XP SP2 and that didn't work either, I'm really running out of options here, somehow I'm lead to believe it's a driver issue.. even though my other games seem to work fine.
However since you mention you got it working on 64 bit, this gives me hope that I can get it working somehow.. I also re-installed the game without any applications up just in case that was the problem, but to no avail.
Oh also to note, the game crashes with or without SP1 installed.

I doubt it's a driver issue, but then again, 80% of Vista errors are Nvidia based errors :/
Hmm... you can take a look at the patches, see if they do anything for ya.

Thanks.
Where does one acquire the 1.4 patch, legitimately? It says you need it prior to installing 1.5.
Edit: Just got 1.4 from FileFront or whatever, still crashes.
Also I just installed 1.5, still crashes as well.
Anyhow I'm tired.. going to switch back to XP for tonight and I'll attempt more tomorrow.

I have hotfixes and patches that I share with everyone that uses Vista X64. For some reason, Microsoft doesn't tell urge you to update it, or let you know it's vital to run your OS with stability.
when I switched to X64, I looked everywhere for such patches, and spent quite some time looking through Microsoft's KB to find them. At first I was having trouble with Bioshock, it wouldn't run *at all*. But after installing all these patches, I've never had any stability issues.
I keep them on a flashdrive, once I get a chance, I'll rar em and upload em for ya. I don't know why I didn't come up with this before, I guess I like seeing people suffer, lol I'm kidding... April fools? Lawl, anyways I'll upload them in the morning.
PS: It pains me to see anyone go back to XP. I've been using Vista for over a year, and I admit, there were rough times, the media wasn't blowing it out of proportion, but I blame Nvidia.

maybe I'm wasting your time here, but this kind of sounds like a firewall issue, doesn't it? When I used to play the battle for middle earth 2, it used to start up fine, but after every update, I would have to add the game to norton again, or the game would crash everytime I tried to get into multiplayer. Couldn't this be the same thing?

Ah damn, I'd forgotten about the hotfixes too. You're quite right about MS not publicising them - hell, it's like they were keeping them a secret.
I'm not going to blame nVidia quite so much - they do recommend the hotfixes and have links to several on their site.
...er, well they did...

That sucks for those of us that can't get SP1 yet, for some bizarre reason :/

I got SP1 though, but yes those hotfixes would be much appreciated, I just want to game.
Honestly though theres nothing wrong with XP or Vista for me, I see them both as perfectly fit for using, I just have to work out this tiny problem that I have and all is well.
Also yeah I have a brand new computer and pretty much everything, down to my mouse is Vista certified, I also have the latest drivers for everything as well.
The Firewall thing seems a bit far-fetched on my part, as of being the culprit, but hey.. guess it couldn't hurt to try.

Brand new computer? That's pretty far from the girl I met trying to decide a video card on a budget

Eh.. screw this I say, nothing on Vista is working, I can't even change the affinity because ''Access is denied'' ffs.
I give up really, might as well F-Disk this and snap the CD in half, complete waste of my time, I mean honestly what is the point in using an OS if you can't game on it? I have freaking tried everything - even those hotfixes.
The AMD one couldn't even run because ''A program needed to access blah blah could not be ran'', I guess you guys are just lucky or something.

It's sort of tough - we're at a bit of a crossroads between 32-bit and 64-bit computing. Look at it this way - it's highly likely that all *future* games will be compatible with 64-bit Vista, if not necessarily 64-bit native. You're going to be better off when games start pushing toward the 2GB limit.
BTW, 4GB is not accessible to applications - Windows reserves a very large chunk of that. Careful tweaking will push it to about 2.5 to 3.0GB at most, but the rest remains reserved for system and drivers. So, you're going to see games more frequently hit this ceiling in the near future.
Granted, it's not much consolation for the incompatibility you may run into *today*, but... well, there are tradeoffs either way, I guess. A year or two from now, 64-bit will be much more common even in gaming machines.

Yes but above posters mention no problems - that means I should be fine too, especially after SP1.
And atm I only have 2GB of ram, I just got 64bit cause I might change that in the future. I didn't think there would really be that much of a difference in the way that 32bit and 64bit work, but apparently they are two different worlds.

I've been hearing the 64-bit speech since 2004. Granted there wasn't much support and everything--all drivers had to be "Microsoft signed".
Now, when I was deciding to switch to 64-bit, I still heard about all the drivers that had to be signed by Microsoft, and how they won't allow 3rd party drivers and that it's by that factor alone that the is "security increase". This alone delayed my upgraded, but... I use 3rd party drivers all the time, my solution is clicking the "install anyways" button.
But Brianna, I'd say if any operating system is giving you so much trouble off the bat, do a complete system format, and re-installation: because nothing should give you that much trouble.

Can I do a fresh format with OEM though, they won't give me crap for it?
When I installed it I just put the CD in and ran it from a clean HDD, installed it from the 298GB of unallocated space.

Yeah, fresh format from OEM is fine.
When you goto the installation screen where it asks you which drive you want to install it on, make sure you delete the current partition, then make a new one, then format the new one, then install on it
It's fine that you install over unallocated space, because Vista automatically preps the drive, but it doesn't hurt to do it manually.

Umm, didn't vista sp1 allow you to have 4gb of ram in 32bit os's? I think I read that somewhere...

Yeah I know, formatted XP enough times to know my way around that bit, I'll try it out later if I really have to do it as a last resort.

Let us know how the install goes; I can try to come up with some other thoughts, too. Don't know how helpful they'll be, but I can give it a shot.
I've been running 64bit Vista since... erm actually I can't even remember how long I've been running it. Probably too long. It's working fine for me; no problems with GW or any other game I play.
I do usually tell people to go for the 32bit unless they have a high tolerance for general BS - I've had to do some funky things to get drivers to work, and sometimes you just will not get drivers for what you want.
32bit SP1 does show you if you have more RAM, but the usage of that RAM doesn't change. The only real update there is to show the RAM you have, not just the RAM that Vista can use (and this is pretty hardware dependant).

Honestly I was thinking it was my hardware, like RAM timings, I just don't get why single-player works but multi doesn't.
Guild Wars was the only thing that worked right, also I downloaded my card's drivers right off the Nvidia site and installed them with no problems, tried the ones the update system had, but no change.

If you haven't messed with the RAM timings, it should still be on auto, which means it's running at the slowest, therefore most stable setting possible.
But it's a good thing to find out what your RAM is rated at, then set manufacturer's timings because you don't wanna add another problem to your list.
EDIT: And if single player works but multi doesn't, it's a good chance it's software, not hardware based.
